What’s your cause/area of focus: Women’s Rights
Why do you think it is so important?
I am fighting for women's rights, to give women the space to reach their development goals. I focus on women because when women are given the space they need, and a platform to show what they have, they will definitely bring positive change in their communities. It is important to invest in women because when you invest in women you are investing in your community. When women succeed, their success goes back to their community.
Tell us about yourself. What's your background? What inspired you to begin living for change?
I am a woman aged 29 years of age. I had a chance to become a leader in my past school life. I thank God for those opportunities because they have shaped me into who I am today. Getting involved in my cause was not an accident; I had this spirit in me since my Ordinary Level (O-Level) studies, and because the calling was deep, I started strategizing on what to do to my community. In my free time, I had that master plan diary where I was writing all my thoughts on how I will dedicate myself to change in my community.
My inspiration is myself; I need change, so if I need change as a woman in different angles that’s the change another woman needs. Who can ask for our changes if not ourselves? We need to change us.
If there are challenges I face in my business, my work sphere, marriage, relationship, and community life, it seems obvious to me that another woman faces the same [challenges] so standing for me is standing for all of us.
What have you been doing to spread the word and/or to help your cause so far?
Currently, I am running the WomanUp radio program, on an online radio station in my country called Boresha Radio. You can stream my program every Sunday, starting from 3.00 pm (East African Time). In my sessions, I discuss the different challenges that women face in their daily lives and how we can overcome them. I get time to discuss with experts who have succeeded in such challenges and they share how they managed [to overcome]. So that gives room for other women to learn and understand that there is no situation that is permanent and that we [as women] face challenges that we can endure and win.
How and when will you judge success? What’s your endpoint?
Success is that point in life that you are one step forward from what you were yesterday. It is believing that you can, no matter what.
