What does life as a woman or girl look like in your part of the world? What roles do women play in your society?

I come from a land which is known for its culture and heritage, where bonds between families and people are at the highest. And I come from one of the states of India which is known as God’s own country - none other than Kerala. But still, sometimes we wonder, how can it be called ‘God’s own country’ when the women have no freedom?

Compared to the other states in India, Kerala is one of the most literate and free. Still, women cannot freely walk at night in rural areas, not because they are prohibited, but because if they do, no one can guarantee if they will return back alive. All because of wild animals. No, not the ones in the jungle, but the ones inside some cruel men.

Otherwise in Kerala, women play a large role in society. They are more educated, smart, and travel to many places. [Here, a woman] is a daughter, a mother, and a wife who easily manages her office work and her housework. Women are mostly working in Kerala, and I am proud that I am a woman born in Kerala of all the states in India.

What do you think is the most significant barrier to women empowerment and/or gender equality today?

Women have to make sacrifices, regarding their jobs. In many circumstances, the man can get away with anything, but the women cannot - such a sad story is our society these days.

OK, tell us all about yourself. Who are YOU & what should the world know about you?

My name is Sanjana Krishnan and I am currently doing my 3rd year in Law. My dreams are so high that I know being a lawyer is not my destination but it’s a part of my life's journey on becoming the person I truly am. My ultimate dream is to be worldwide. I am being ambitious and I can say that I want to grow up to that level where I no longer need to introduce myself to someone. One day, I will achieve all my dreams and the world will know me for my speaking skills 😊.

Describe yourself: "I am...

a crazy ambitious girl becoming a woman who is keen on achieving all her dreams

What are you most passionate about and what are you doing with that passion?

I am really passionate about public speaking. Being on the stage gives me a sense of belonging. Even after being an introvert girl, I feel I completely change myself when I get on the stage. I really love writing poems too to express my emotions. It’s a medium through which I can escape my sadness.

What are some of the most notable events (milestones) that have happened in your life to date?

The biggest milestone that happened in my life was when I went for the state university youth festival literary events, right after a week where I had been severely admitted to the hospital. For the events, which I shared a great passion for, I gave my best and the moment I bagged an A grade in that competition, I knew that hard work and hope do pay off, even not always but at least sometimes…

What obstacles have you faced and overcome?

I had faced obstacles of going out[side], mainly because everyone is concerned about safety, but I am breaking that notion. I am flying high now.

Looking externally into the public sphere, what female public figure inspires you the most to achieve your dreams & why?

I really look up to Mary Kom. She as a boxer and a girl - especially from such a rural place, marked herself in the world, so that’s something which would make anyone her fan. She is who she is because of her passion, dedication, and her strong character.

What's your definition of success?

Success is not a destination. It’s a continuous journey of hours of self-dedication, being authentic and staying true to yourself to maintain that success.

How have the women and girls around you helped you to get to where you are today?

My mother and my grandmother have played a great role in making me the woman I am today. They provided me with great strength and the belief that being a woman won’t stop me from achieving my dreams.
