Fitria Novalita Rusma
Hello, my name is Fitria Novalita Rusma, Founder & CEO of Shy Candy.
I am a woman with an interest in children’s education, especially sex education. I graduated from Industrial Engineering but it has actually helped me to start and grow a business. I spend my time writing and drawing sketches in my notebook, hoping it will create a difference. With the help of a coach and other resources, I started to build Shy Candy.
Tell us more about your company. What products do you offer?
It was a dream at first: to raise awareness about sex education for children and parents. After numerous attempts of failing to hold down a job and create a difference in children’s education, I still can’t believe it! It was not a perfect launch. Instead, it was a rocky road. But despite everything, we managed to sell 2701pcs children’s books specializing in sex education on our first and second launch.
How did you get the idea or concept for your company? Was there anything in particular that inspired you to start at the time you did?
I will make a confession. I am a survivor of child sexual abuse. Growing up, I also experienced sexual assaults, up until 2019. Obviously, it traumatized me - until it gave me psychosis. I wish children would never feel and experience what I did.
What's your definition of success? Do you consider yourself a success? If not, when will you?
I received various reviews on my children’s books. When I receive harsh critiques, I recall the positive ones. If [your idea/product] helps one person, then it is a success for you. Obviously, you can’t make everyone happy.
What advice would you give to a woman starting out in your industry or starting her own company/organization?
You don’t have to wait until you experience something damaging to start your business. Surely it could motivate you, but it could also throw you into the darkest pit. Start now, go sit on your chair, and pour out your ideas. The world will support you.
Describe yourself in ONE word. Compassionate.
